Synopsis of research

My research fields are varied and include several major topics: Health Policy, Health Economics and Health Services Research. A majority of my research focuses on issues in modern health policy, such as the public private mix in healthcare funding and the impact of health regulations on demand for and expenditures on health care. Throughout years, I performed studies by using different research techniques both qualitative (in depth interviews) and quantitative methods. It is my goal to achieve a broad perspective on the field by integrating both "hard evidence" (analyzing data) and "soft evidence" (interviewing patients, policy-makers, etc.).

As part of my worldview, I usually try to send manuscripts to leading journals in the field. During my PhD studies, we published an article where I was the first author (with an asterisk) in the Journal of Neuroscience, a Q1 journal. The article was among the first to demonstrate reversible epigenetic changes in different brain regions following massive drug consumption (in lab animals). The findings in this paper could constitute the scientific infrastructure for a possible treatment mechanism in substance abuse. The paper was cited above 80 times in the scientific literature.

In 2019, I was a member of a research team that published a paper dealing with the clinical outcomes and possible novel policy recommendations of bariatric surgery in the elderly population. Obesity is a global pandemic, which affect life expectancy, quality of life and poses an economic burden on society. We found that bariatric surgery for elderly patients, above 65 years demonstrated overall good clinical outcomes in terms of weight loss and improving pre-existing medical conditions. This paper was cited over 30 and it may be marked a way to change the  age based criteria for the surgery.

Another paper which I would like to emphasize is dealing with the economic burden of hip fracture in Israel. Our research team tried to evaluate the economic burden of hip fracture in the elderly in Israel. In this article, we presented the enormous costs to the economy resulting from hip fractures. Based on out analysis, these costs are above one billion NIS per year and our work was also presented to policymakers during the establishment of a national falls prevention program. During this unique project I merged between my academic activity (health economics, quality in healthcare, etc.) and my daily occupation as the principal investigator in a leading hospital in Israel. This work also received scientific recognition as it won an excellent poster award at the annual conference of Israeli society for quality in healthcare during 2017.

A recent article published together with my research colleague's deals with the effects of the arrangements law on financing elective surgeries in Israel. The findings described in the article point to a dramatic change in surgery funding within the private healthcare system in Israel: more than 60% of the surgeries in the private healthcare system in Israel are publicly funded (compared to only 5% in the years before health regulation came into force). The findings of this work were presented to the senior management of the MOH and MOF in Israel. It should be noted that this paper receives a relatively large exposure (ranked first=high number of downloads and views, based on the journal website(.

In an objective assessment of academic performance, I can say that I tend to publish three papers per year and to annually submit approximately 20 grants applications. My aim is to contribute to the existing knowledge in the fields of health system management, health policy and health economics and to expand my work to other fields and new colleagues as well.

Teaching Statement

My main goals in teaching deals with achieving high levels of understanding which will assist student to implement the courses material with an emphasis on using the courses highlights in daily routine.

I aim to transfer the knowledge by using modern techniques that assure deep understanding of the courses contents rather than methods that prioritize memorizing abilities.

I believe in full transparency, fairness with the students and I strongly believe that the academy should provide effective tools for students so that they can apply the acquired knowledge in real life. This will enable the students to initiate evidence-based decisions in their occupation.

In order to fulfill these goals, I am  trying to combine relevant and updated issues in my courses, to add relevant videos to my courses and to use online tools which helped me in the past to engage the student to the courses objectives and to my requirements. In my courses, I present some of my research projects that are being held in Assuta Medical Centers in order to give students a chance for a glance on relevant research and novel projects. I consider myself as devoted to work and highly available to student's requests and questions.

In my current position in Netanya academic college, my feedback is very good with students pointing to fairness and courses that address relevant topics as two of my main strengths.

In the future, I plan to expand my teaching fields and to improve my teaching skills by participating in advanced teaching techniques courses as well as several computer skills (advanced PowerPoint, etc(..
