  1. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans

My research includes two areas in the discipline of Sociology: health and family. The sociological, cultural, and ethical aspects of the formation of families through fertility treatments, which is the interface between health and the family, constitute the main scientific contribution of my studies. I conduct both quantitative and qualitative studies and adapt the methodology to the nature of the phenomenon being explored. I constantly endeavor to continue to study and acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge, and for that purpose, I did my postdoctoral fellowship in the bioethics of fertility treatments at the University of Montreal, and focused on posthumous assisted reproduction. Over the last ten years, I have been investigating the social, cultural, and ethical aspects of the sperm banking industry in Israel and the United States. For the past five years I have conducted research in collaboration with an Arabic-speaking researcher on Muslim couples who opt for fetal sex selection treatments and sperm and egg donations, which are forbidden by Islamic sharia.       I continued in this field of research and examined the ethical and cultural aspects of posthumous reproduction and how egg donors present themselves on the websites of American egg donation. Another study dealt with the psychological aspects of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments in Israel and focused on the concept of the ’emotional labor' of patients. Other medical topics that I have researched and published on deal with moral dilemmas involving organ donations and transplants, pig use for medical purposes among Muslims and Jews, and euthanasia.

In addition to the field of health, I am researching various topics in the sociology of the family. I conducted two wide-ranging studies on the military and national bereavement of remarried widows, and coined the concept of 'negative symbolic capital'. The conclusions of my research, inter alia,  are that culturally sensitive treatment must be given to Bedouin IDF widows, were presented to a committee of the Ministry of Defense Rehabilitation and Commemoration Division. Other family-related issues that had not previously been accorded academic attention and researched are the practices of matchmakers in the national religious community with their gender, cultural and ethical aspects, as well as the couple relationships of people who are disqualified from marrying according to Jewish law and the hardships they undergo. Another research project that I carried out early in my research career dealt with the balance of power in relationships and persuasion strategies between spouses, where I coined the concept of 'subjective balance of power' between spouses. I recently completed a first-of-its-kind study that revealed the ways people invest in their relationships to improve them, and I published two articles based on the findings of this study. In order to gain a broad and in-depth view of the phenomena studied and in keeping with the spirit of the era, my research is conducted through interdisciplinary collaborations: I initiated and set up seven different research teams in parallel, which include sociologists, psychologists, specialists in organizational behavior, ethicists, and physicians. Of these, five are permanent teams with whom I  have been conducting fruitful collaborations for three to eight years (and hopefully will continue these fruitful collaborations), as well as two new research teams that include gynecologists specializing in fertility.

I have been teaching a variety of social science courses for 29 years, including undergraduate courses in Sociology and Research Methods as well as a number of courses in management. The management courses include the subject of ethics, a topic I addressed in my postdoctoral fellowship and about which I publish empirical and conceptual articles periodically. Therefore, I often have the opportunity to demonstrate the theoretical material taught in the courses using relevant examples from my own research. My contribution to the institution in which I am employed is primarily pedagogical, in teaching courses which integrate interactive learning in lectures and in the world of research by representing the college in international academic forums, publishing in refereed international journals with high impact factors, and appearing at academic conferences. I see my contribution to the community as a dual contribution: In the academic community I have been working intensively for 7 years to promote academic staff members in institutions of higher education by conducting one-day and year-long academic writing workshops and by advising and accompanying lecturers in the process of preparing and revising articles for publication. In the public sphere, I try to realize my sense of mission and personal vision by providing an international academic platform for silenced voices from various weakened sectors of Israeli society, including: Jewish and Bedouin IDF widows; fertility patients from the Muslim Arab sector and their spouses; sperm bank clients that are subject to consciousness manipulation; members of nursing and medical staff as well as Jewish and Muslim patients experiencing moral dilemmas due to conflicts between religious and cultural codes. In calling attention to these issues, some of which are hidden from the public eye, and some of which cause distress and suffering for human beings I hope to shine a light on the dark back-alleys of Israeli society in particular, and the essence of human nature and the hidden social order in general.

My research program for the next five years includes collaboration with two teams of gynecologists specializing in IVF. In one team I set up, I am beginning to research the organizational support that IVF patients receive as well as the two-way stress transfer between the patients and their partners. In a second team I set up with a senior physician who specializes in IVF treatments, I will soon begin a qualitative study that will include interviews with IVF patients in a lesbian relationship and with their partners. In addition, I am starting a collaboration with a director of a large sperm bank, and we are conducting a unique in-depth and wide-ranging study of the personality traits and attachment patterns of sperm donors compared to a control group of men who are not willing to donate sperm. In this study my aim is to reveal the self-presentation style of sperm donor advertisers as well as the rhetorical means they use for impression management. Another new study that I will begin soon in the winter of 2026 will deal with the discursive formation between individuals who seek partners for the purpose of bearing a child under a co-parenting agreement without a couple relationship. In this study I intend to reveal how people seeking a co-parenting partner present themselves verbally as well as through a semiotic visual analysis of the pictures they present in their profile, on dating sites dedicated to co-parenting. I intend to compare between heterosexual and LGBTQ+ individuals seeking to form a family by elective co-parenting arrangements. Recently I also started to plan and design a unique study about the association between relationship gaslighting, fear of being single and attachment style.
